Modern cars are mostly boring, well, at least not as entertaining as they used to be. For the most part, modern cars have lost what we call the “soul”. They are generic products, very similar and tightly packaged. They are reliable, safe and comfortable, but that’s all. Here’s some modern cars that managed to retain a bit of yesterday’s magical feel.

5 - 2002 Subaru WRX wagon

Function over form, terrible interior bu with an excellent drive train.

4 - 2003 Mercury Marauder

The American sport sedan for the masses

3 - 1998 Volvo V90

A updated version of Volvo-famed 700 series boxy wagon, pretty much like a DC-3 with modern engines and avionics

2 - 2006 Fiat Ulysse Panda 2.0

An MPV with a twist of hot 90’s hatch

1 - 2002 Mazda RX-8

Mazda DNA, futuristic design, ingenious suicide doors and rotary goodness

2004-2006 Scion xB.

Rev-happy motor when paired with the 5-speed, huge amounts of space inside, surprisingly toss-able & stable chassis given it is shaped like an industrial air-conditioner(and nearly as powerful).

It’s not that I don’t like it, or at least the idea, I just think it’s not all it could be. Especially when compared to some of the things mazda has done with their rotary engines. And I’m not necessarily talking about power output either.

I see one glaring issue - none of those are modern cars. They’re all 10+ yrs old.

Modern = New, currently available.

Old = Old.

What would your top five be for something that you could buy new, today, as a ‘15 or ‘16 model?

The ‘02 and ‘03 WRXs actually had much better seats than the facelifted cars, and I prefer their interiors.

Here’s a few I thought I might add,

Bmw 135i, really the only current non-M bmw that conforms to bmws old ways. A small car in a world of bloated sedans masquerading as coupes.

Magnum srt-8, you have to understand, this came out during a time when most people in the money grew up with and were sick and tired of the whole concept of the family station wagon.

Infinity m45, this one is mostly subjective but it’s a damn good looking Japanese sedan with crisp lines that actually made it to the states. Crisp lines haven’t exactly been a thing on most Japanese cars in a long time.

2. First of all, the Panda isn’t an MPV. It is also called Panda 100HP and has a 99hp 1.4 Liter engine. It is therefore just about the least hot Hot Hatch ever.

PRV is an engine designed by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo, the Ulysse is a product of a PSA-Fiat joint venture called Eurovan.
